That they should decline to depart fully from this world is understandable. That they should continue to manifest themselves to some people is also understandable. Is the ghost of the Shelbourne Hotel a throwback to this time? Did she die during the Asiatic cholera pandemic? And why has she chosen to manifest herself in the hotel?

We do not know for sure, nor can we ever know (one presumes), unless Mary Masters decided to appear to a great many people at the same time and tell all, with dates and details. After all, if she is a ghost she is able to choose a time and place to do so. But there would be no mystery or fun in that, for in the unknown is the fascination.

And who will know if they lie abed some night in the particular area of the Shelbourne Hotel where the child spirit is said to wander, that the noise they just heard in the still of night was attributable to an ordinary movement of cloth or the sough of a breeze passing along as the room settles for the night. Who will know for certain that they have not met Mary Masters, or whatever her name might be?
